a city in E Greece, in E Thessaly: fortified by Justinian; annexed to Greece in 1881. Pop.: 130 000 (2005 est.) Larisa a city in Greece, in Thessaly, on the Pinios River. The administrative center of Larisa Department. Population, 72,300 (1971). Larisa is an important transportation hub with a large airport. The city produces silk, cotton, processed food, and building materials. One of the world’s oldest cities, Larisa was the ancient Hellenes’ leading city in the sixth century B.C.
