a city in E Greece, in E Thessaly: fortified by Justinian; annexed to Greece in 1881. Pop.: 130 000 (2005 est.)

Larisa 

a city in Greece, in Thessaly, on the Pinios River. The administrative center of Larisa Department. Population, 72,300 (1971).

Larisa is an important transportation hub with a large airport. The city produces silk, cotton, processed food, and building materials. One of the world’s oldest cities, Larisa was the ancient Hellenes’ leading city in the sixth century B.C. Under the Turks, who conquered it in the 15th century, it was known as Yeni-Shehr; the city hasbeen part of Greece since 1881.
