Lassen Peak

 or Mount Lassen

Volcano, southern end of the Cascade Range, northeastern California, U.S. It erupted on May 30, 1914, and intermittently thereafter until 1921. The peak is 10,457 ft (3,187 m) high and is the principal attraction of Lassen Volcanic National Park, which occupies an area of 106,372 acres (43,047 hectares). In 1821 Luis Argüello, a Spanish officer, became the first European to discover the peak. It is named for Peter Lassen, an explorer who guided settlers through the area.

Lassen Peak 

a volcano in the USA in the southern Cascade Mountains. Altitude, 3,187 m. It is active with long hiatuses; it was considerably active from 1914 to 1917. The region around the peak, with its lava fields, volcanic cones, geysers, hot springs, varied vegetation, and rich fauna, was set aside in 1916 as Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Lassen Peak is named after a Danish settler named Peter Lassen, who had a ranch near the base of the volcano even before the area was declared as a part of the United States.
The highway is now one of four listed in Oregon as an "All-American Road" with the national program, along with the Historic Columbia River Highway, the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway in Eastern Oregon and the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway that runs from Crater Lake to Lassen Peak in Northern California.
Here you are greeted with the bubbling mud and sulphuric smell of a volcanic zone as well as the opportunity to climb Lassen Peak itself which tops 10,457ft - fortunately not quite as daunting as it sounds when the car park lies at 8,500ft.
