Paál, László

Born July 30, 1846, in Zam, in what is now Rumania; died Mar. 3 (or 4), 1879, in Charenton-le-Pont, France. Hungarian painter.

Paál studied at the Vienna Academy of Arts from 1864 to 1869. He worked in Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands, and France. The greatest representative of 19th-century Hungarian realist landscape painting, he was influenced by the Barbizon School. His works, akin to those of M. Munkácsy, are distinguished by simple and natural motifs, thick application of paint, and a spirited technique. Paál used a rich palette based mainly on gradations of dark middle tints.
