| This oil, of course, originated from the Late Jurassic Kimmeridge Clay Formation. Yet the earliest birds must have originated well before the late Jurassic, when Archaeopteryx lived. Among specimens recently recovered from the site by a Chinese team were more than 200 fossils of a primitive bird, Confucius ornis, together with many species of dinosaurs, mammals, insects and plants - an apparently complete record of the life there at the instant in the late Jurassic or early Cretaceous period when it was suddenly wiped out. |
