Lathrop, George Parsons (lā`thrəp), 1851–98, American author, b. near Honolulu; studied in Germany (1867–70). He was the husband of Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, the daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Lathrop wrote A Study of Hawthorne (1876), edited the Riverside edition of Hawthorne's works (1883), and adapted Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter for Walter Damrosch's opera (1896). His other writings include poems, Rose and Roof-tree (1875); travel essays, Spanish Vistas (1883); and several novels. Lathrop and his wife were Roman Catholics, and after his death she became a nun.
