Latin
1. the language of ancient Rome and the Roman Empire and of the educated in medieval Europe, which achieved its classical form during the 1st century bc. Having originally been the language of Latium, belonging to the Italic branch of the Indo-European family, it later formed the basis of the Romance group
2. a member of any of those peoples whose languages are derived from Latin
3. an inhabitant of ancient Latium
4. of or relating to the Latin language, the ancient Latins, or Latium
5. characteristic of or relating to those peoples in Europe and Latin America whose languages are derived from Latin
6. of or relating to the Roman Catholic Church

In contrast to such Latinists as the tenth-century Hrotsvitha von Gandersheim or the twelfth-century Hildegard von Bingen, early modern German nuns rarely produced work in Latin (with the notable exception of Caritas Pirckheimer).
Following the recent release of a new, one-volume edition of the dictionary of contemporay Latin titled Lexicon Recentis Latinitas, the Vatican panel of five Latinists is now busily working on keeping up with all kinds of new phrases used in conversation these days.
The only place in which this "maleness" is replaced by feminine discourse is in poems written by women Latinists about being women Latinists.
