On northwestern border of AL; organized Feb 13, 1818 (prior to statehood) from Cherokee cession. Name Origin: At suggestion of Gen. John Coffee (1772-1833), for Col. James Lauderdale (?-1814), who died fighting under Coffee at the Battle of Talladega.

    On the central eastern border of MS, south of Columbus; organized Dec 23, 1833 from Choctaw cession. Name Origin: For Col. James Lauderdale (?-1814), soldier killed at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812.

    The only possible very late Paleocene brackish to normal marine fauna that I am aware of that contains turtles and crocodilians is Carnegie Museum Locality 517 in the upper part of the Tuscahoma Formation at Meridian in Lauderdale County, Mississippi.
