In south-central KY; established Dec 12,1825 from Rockcastle, Knox, Clay, and Whitley counties. Name Origin: For the Laurel River, named for the abundant mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) trees on its banks.

Area (sq mi): 443.74 (land 435.67; water 8.07). Pop per sq mi: 129.30.
Pop 2005: 56,338. State rank: 15. Pop change: 2000-20005 6.90%; 1990-2000 21.40%. Pop 2000: 52,715 (White 97.20%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.30%; Other 1.40%). Foreign born: 0.80%. Median age: 35.50.
Income 2000: per capita $14,165; median household $27,015; Pop below poverty level: 21.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,925-$20,473.
Unemployment 2004: 5.40%. Change from 2000: -0.10%. Median travel time to work: 22.50 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 23.10%.
