In central GA, southeast of Macon; organized Dec 10, 1807 from Wilkinson County. Name Origin: For Lt. John Laurens (1753-82), officer in the American Revolution, who received the sword of Gen. Charles Cornwallis when the latter surrendered at Yorktown, VA.
