The powders are composed mainly of the HCP alpha and Laves phases which transform to i-phase owing to rapid quenching during plasma spraying.
A small fraction of the Laves phase is also likely to be present.
The starting powders consist mainly of [alpha] and Laves phase whereas the coating microstructure is constituted mainly by the QC i-phase along with some Laves and a high Zr-containing phase.
