Laz

(Chany), an ethnic group of Georgians who in the past were one of the Georgian tribes.

The Laz are the native population of the southeastern coast of the Black Sea and part of the Çoruh River basin. Most of the Laz live in Turkey (about 50,000); some live in the Adzhar ASSR. They speak the Laz (Chan) dialect of the Zan language, which belongs to the Kartvelian group of languages. The Laz in Turkey were forced to adopt Islam. Despite compulsory measures to assimilate them as Turks, the Laz have preserved their language and culture.
