Lazar
(Lazar Hrebeljanović). Born circa 1329; died June 15, 1389. Serbian prince from 1371 to 1389. In the beginning of the 1370’s, Lazar’s possessions stretched from the city of Novo Brdo in the south to Belgrade in the north. He strove to unify the Serbian state, which had virtually collapsed under King Uroŝ (1355–71). In 1373 he incorporated the regions of Užice and Rudnik into his possessions. By the end of the 1370’s, he ruled all of northern and central Serbia. He fought the threat of Turkish occupation. In 1386 his troops defeated the Turks in a battle outside Ploćnik. Lazar perished in the battle of Kosovo Polje. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
