Lazarevich, Vladimir Salamanovich 

Born Sept. 2 (14), 1882; died June 20, 1938. Soviet military figure; division commander (1935). Member of the Communist Party from 1932. Born in Belostok; son of an office worker.

Lazarevich graduated from the Academy of the General Staff in 1912 and served in World War I (1914–18) as a lieutenant colonel. In the Red Army from 1918, he participated in the Civil War of 1918–20 as chief of staff of the Fourth Army (December 1918 to March 1919) and of the Southern Group of the Eastern Front (March to May 1919). From May to November 1919, Lazarevich commanded the Fourth Army and participated in the counteroffensive against Kolchak’s troops. He was chief of staff of the Western Front from November 1919 to March 1920. Lazarevich was commander of the Third Army of the Western Front from June to October 1920 and of the Fourth Army of the Southern Front from October 1920 to February 1921; while commanding the troops of the Turkestan Front from February 1921 to January 1922, he directed the struggle against the Basmachi. In the 1920’s and 1930’s, Lazarevich held various command and teaching positions, including chief of the Air Force Academy from 1925 to 1927. He was awarded two Orders of the Red Banner.
