Leacock, Ricky

Leacock, (Richard) Ricky (1921–  ) documentary filmmaker; born in the Canary Islands, Spain. Born to British parents, he began making films at age 14, then came to the U.S.A. at age 17. After serving as a combat cameraman with the U.S. Army in World War II, he worked with Robert Flaherty and other important American documentary filmmakers. He was among the pioneers in using portable equipment and the cinéma vérité style. He founded the film department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among his best known films is Monterey Pop (1968).
