Name Origin: For Fort Leavenworth, the state's first fort, named for Gen. Henry Leavenworth (1783-1834), officer in the War of 1812 who later fought the Indians. Area (sq mi): 468.33 (land 463.27; water 5.06). Pop per sq mi: 157.80. Pop 2005: 73,113. State rank: 6. Pop change: 2000-20005 6.40%; 1990-2000 6.70%. Pop 2000: 68,691 (White 82.00%; Black or African American 10.40%; Hispanic or Latino 3.80%; Asian 1.10%; Other 4.20%). Foreign born: 2.70%. Median age: 35.60.
