On the northeastern border of KS, north of Kansas City; original county; organized Aug 25, 1855 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Fort Leavenworth, the state's first fort, named for Gen. Henry Leavenworth (1783-1834), officer in the War of 1812 who later fought the Indians.
