Leavitt, Henrietta Swan

Leavitt, Henrietta Swan (1868–1921) astronomer; born in Lancaster, Mass. She attended Radcliffe College and volunteered at the Harvard College Observatory before joining the staff in 1902. As head of the photographic photometry department until 1921, she studied the brightness of stars and showed how that variable could be used to judge their distance.
