Lebedenko, Aleksandr Gervas’evich 

Born June 9 (21), 1892, in Cherkassy; died Dec. 9, 1975, in Leningrad. Soviet Russian writer. Member of the CPSU from 1919.

Lebedenko participated in World War I and the Civil War of 1918–20. His work was first published in 1917. He is the author of several children’s books, the novels House Without Ghosts (1963) and The Ships’ Sails Rustle (1970), and such novellas as The Girl From the Taiga (1960), Mistake En Route (1961), Zoia (1965), and Elena Kirillovna (1966). The core of his life work is based on historical and revolutionary themes—for example, the novels The Heavy Battalion (1932–33), devoted to World War I, and Face to Face (1957), dealing with the Civil War, and the novella The First Ministerial (1934), which is about the revolutionary events of 1905 in the provinces. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
