Leeuwarden

Leeuwarden (lā`vär'dən), Frisian Ljouwert, city (1994 est. pop. 87,500), capital of Friesland prov., N Netherlands. It is the center of an agricultural and dairying region and has a noted cattle market. Manufactures include food products, clothing, artificial silk, and tin. Chartered in 1435, Leeuwarden was (16th–18th cent.) the center of a goldworking and silverworking industry. Many structures date from the 16th and 17th cent., notably the huge brick Oldehove Tower. The large Frisian Museum is there.

Born on June 17, 1898, in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, Maurits Comelis Escher struggled with his school studies, especially math.
A judge in the northern city of Leeuwarden ordered the felon diner to serve a three-month jail term Monday after he confessed to ordering meals and wine at restaurants around the Netherlands, only to plead poverty when the bill came.
