Leffel, James (1806–66) inventor; born in Botetourt County, Va. Taken to Ohio as an infant, he grew up on the frontier and received only intermittent schooling. As a young man he designed, built, and operated a water-powered sawmill near Springfield, Ohio. Over the years he perfected several improved types of waterwheel. He also patented two types of cooking stoves and achieved local fame as a breeder of poultry.
