On the eastern border of OK, east of McAlester; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Choctaw lands. Name Origin: For Greenwood LeFlore (1800-65), leader of a prominent Choctaw family of French ancestry, a landowner, and MS state legislator. He remained in MS when most of the tribe were moved to OK.

Area (sq mi): 1608.03 (land 1585.82; water 22.20). Pop per sq mi: 31.20.
Pop 2005: 49,528. State rank: 13. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.90%; 1990-2000 11.20%. Pop 2000: 48,109 (White 78.40%; Black or African American 2.20%; Hispanic or Latino 3.80%; Asian 0.20%; Other 17.10%). Foreign born: 2.50%. Median age: 36.10.
Income 2000: per capita $13,737; median household $27,278; Pop below poverty level: 19.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,404-$20,832.
