Legal Age

the age, established by law, at which a person acquires civil transactional capacity and many other rights and duties.

In the USSR the legal age is 18. Upon attaining the age of 18, citizens acquire the right to vote, civil rights, and rights and duties regarding marriage and the family—for example, the right to marry, adopt a child, and act as guardian or curator. In certain cases, some rights or duties expire with the attainment of legal age—for example, the right to receive support from one’s parents. Under the law, certain rights are acquired before the attainment of legal age—for example, the right to work (age 16) and partial transactional capacity among minors (age 15). Other rights are acquired after the attainment of legal age—for example, the right to be elected to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (age 21). Persons who have reached legal age bear full legal responsibility for their actions and deeds.
