Legionnaire's disease (lē'jənârz`), infectious, sometimes fatal, disease characterized by high fever, dry cough, lung congestion, and subsequent pneumonia pneumonia (n ..... The disease struck over 180 people attending an American Legion convention in Philadelphia in July, 1976—hence the name. The causative bacterium, later identified as Legionella pneumophilia, is inhaled via contaminated water droplets, primarily from air conditioning and ventilation systems. A milder form of the disease has also been identified. During July and August 2005, two patients with Legionnaire's disease living in 2 countries in Europe were reported to EWGL1NET. OSHA's technical manual on Legionnaire's Disease (section III, Chapter 7) states that water should not only be stored at a minimum of 140[degrees]F, but it should be "delivered at a minimum of 122[degrees]F to all outlets" to "minimize the growth of Legionella in a system. Drexler reflects on outbreaks of swine flu, legionnaire's disease, and AIDS that took people by surprise in the past few decades. |
