Lehman, Adele Lewisohn

Lehman, Adele Lewisohn (1882–1965) philanthropist, art collector, painter; born in New York City (daughter of Adolph Lewisohn). She studied at Barnard (1900) and married Arthur Lehman, an investment banker (1901). She became active in the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, of which her husband was a founder; after he died she founded the Arthur Lehman Counseling Service to help people needing psychiatric services. Herself an heiress, her philanthropies extended to many activities, from the woman suffrage movement to handicapped children. She and her husband collected Italian art works, many of which became part of various museum collections. She also painted landscapes and still lifes.
