Lein, Voldemar Petrovich

Lein, Vol’demar Petrovich 

Born July 7, 1920, at the station of Bugrysh, Udmurt ASSR. Soviet statesman. Member of the CPSU (1946).

Lein was the son of a railroad foreman. In 1945 he graduated from the Moscow Technological Institute of the Food Industry and in 1958 from the Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the CPSU. He took part in the Great Patriotic War (1941–45).

From 1949, Lein held Soviet and party posts in Latvia and from 1961 to 1970 he was secretary of the Central Committee of the Latvian CP. In 1970 he was appointed minister of the food industry of the USSR. At the Twenty-fourth Party Congress (1971), Lein was elected a candidate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU. He served as a deputy to the sixth through ninth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Lein has been awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and a number of medals.
