Leiopelmatidae
a family of toads of the suborder Amphicoela. The body measures up to 5 cm long. There are two genera— Ascaphus and Leiopelma. The former is represented by a single species, the bell toad (Ascaphus truei), which lives in the northwestern United States and Canada. The male has a short tail that serves as a copulative organ during internal fertilization. Toads of this family live in cold, swiftly flowing mountain streams. The female deposits the eggs (up to 50 eggs at a time) on the undersurface of a rock, to which the eggs are adherent. Larval development lasts from one to three years. The genus Leiopelma comprises three species, which are found in New Zealand. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
