In the decades since World War II, Stanford has become one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. Stanford University

one of the leading universities of the USA, in the state of California. Stanford University was founded with private funds in 1885. As of 1975 it included a graduate school of business and schools of earth sciences, education, engineering, the humanities and sciences, law, and medicine. Other branches include the Food Research Institute, the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace, an institute of physical education and athletics, and the Stanford Accelerator Center. The Hopkins Marine Station, a facility for research in oceanography and biology, is located at Pacific Grove. The university has a medical center, including a hospital with 1,000 beds.

In the 1974–75 academic year the university had more than 11,500 students and 2,500 teachers, including 507 professors. The library, which was founded in 1885, has more than 3.5 million volumes.
