| Jonathan Lemalu mugged his way through the more than three-hour production in fine style, presenting a masterful rendition of the hapless bird catcher whose sybaritic bent almost upends his quest for love and happiness. Sadly, the surtitles failed half way through, and lamentable diction by the large cast - with the excellent exception of Lemalu - rendered the rest of the story unintelligible. The opera, like all the other events, was admirably performed, and it's a relief to see Jonathan Lemalu back in such good voice after what had seemed rather a long period of decline. |
