On the central eastern border of ID; organized Mar 3, 1869 (prior to statehood) from Idaho County. Name Origin: For Fort Lemhi, a Mormon mission on the Salmon River, named for a character in the Book of Mormon.

Area (sq mi): 4569.50 (land 4564.16; water 5.35). Pop per sq mi: 1.70.
Pop 2005: 7,909. State rank: 31. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.30%; 1990-2000 13.10%. Pop 2000: 7,806 (White 95.50%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 2.20%; Asian 0.20%; Other 3.10%). Foreign born: 1.50%. Median age: 42.70.
Income 2000: per capita $16,037; median household $30,185; Pop below poverty level: 15.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,673-$21,458.
Unemployment 2004: 6.80%. Change from 2000: -0.80%. Median travel time to work: 17.50 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 3.20%.
