Lempa (lām`pä), river, c.200 mi (320 km) long, rising in Guatemala and flowing S through Honduras into El Salvador, then generally S to the Pacific Ocean. An important stream, it waters the fertile Lempa valley, largely within El Salvador, which supports a dense agricultural population. How to thank TFD for its existence? The school I visited in the town of Santa Marta told a compelling story of the recent past--a mural done by children shows people fleeing across the Lempa River to refugee camps in Honduras while shots from helicopters picked them off one by one and the river ran with blood. This deficit is expected to be financed by the government through its energy generation company Comision Ejecutiva Hidroelectrica del Rio Lempa (CEL) by giving the distribution companies credit notes to be used for future energy purchases. |
