In east-central NC, southeast of Goldsboro; organized Dec 5, 1791 from Dobbs County, when Dobbs County was dissolved and divided between Glasgow and Lenoir counties. Name Origin: For Gen. William Lenoir (1751-1839), one of the heros of the Battle of Kings Mountain (1780) during the American Revolution and first president of the board of the University of NC.

Area (sq mi): 402.09 (land 399.85; water 2.24). Pop per sq mi: 145.00.
Pop 2005: 57,961. State rank: 43. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.80%; 1990-2000 4.10%. Pop 2000: 59,648 (White 55.50%; Black or African American 40.40%; Hispanic or Latino 3.20%; Asian 0.30%; Other 2.90%). Foreign born: 2.70%. Median age: 38.10.
Income 2000: per capita $16,744; median household $31,191; Pop below poverty level: 16.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,583-$24,149.
Unemployment 2004: 6.20%. Change from 2000: -1.90%. Median travel time to work: 23.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 20.30%.
