Belliarminov, Leonid Georgievich
Born Feb. 5 (17), 1859, Serdobsk District, Saratov Province. Died Mar. 18, 1930, Leningrad. Soviet ophthalmologist. In 1833, Belliarminov graduated from the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg; from 1893 he was a professor there in the subdepartment of eye diseases. Belliarminov proposed new methods of ophthalmoscopy and surgery for a number of eye diseases. At Belliarminov’s initiative “flying eye detachments” were organized for the war against trachoma in the populations of regions where it was widespread. He was chairman during the years 1898–1930 of the St. Petersburg (from 1924, Leningrad) Ophthalmologic Society. Belliarminov founded a school for ophthalmologists.
