Voronin, Leonid Grigor’evich 

Born July 22 (Aug. 4), 1908, in the village of Trituznoe, now in Dnepropetrovsk Oblast. Soviet physiologist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1927. Student of L. A. Orbeli.

Voronin graduated from the department of biology of the Dnepropetrovsk Pedagogical Institute for Professional Education in 1931. He has been chairman of the subdepartment of higher nervous activity at Moscow State University since 1954 (professor since 1950); from 1957 to 1959 he was also director of the Institute of Higher Nervous Activity of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His main works deal with the analysis and synthesis of complex stimulants by the brain of humans and animals and with the interrelations of orienting and conditioned reflexes. Voronin advanced the idea of the main stages in the evolution of acquired human and animal reflexes. He has been awarded two orders, as well as medals.
