leopard sealor sea leopardSpecies (Hydrurga leptonyx) of generally solitary earless seal (family Phocidae) found in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions. It is the only seal that feeds on penguins, young seals, and other warm-blooded prey. It is slender and has a long head and long three-cusped cheek teeth. Named for its black-spotted gray coat, it attains a maximum length and weight (greater in the female) of about 12 ft (3.5 m) and 840 lbs (380 kg). It has a reputation for ferocity but is not known to make unprovoked attacks on humans. How to thank TFD for its existence? For the sea is home to the krill, which is the major source of food for the penguin, but it is also where the leopard seals live, and penguins are the major source of food to the leopard seal. Two enemies--a stinging, swirling snowstorm and a hungry leopard seal demonstrate the dangers of the long trek, which finally brings the mothers, stomachs swollen with their horde of krill and fish, back to the nesting ground and their newly hatched chicks. The cold-climate courtship begins with a flightless migration in which our vibrantly feathered friends trudge up to 75 miles across the continent by foot, in freezing temperatures, in brittle, icy winds and through deep, treacherous waters patrolled by the intimidating leopard seal. |
