Leshern, Sofia

Leshern, Sof’ia Aleksandrovna 

(also S. A. Leshern fon Gertsfel’dt). Born 1840 (or 1842); died 1898. Russian revolutionary and Narodnik (Populist).

In late 1873, Leshern joined F. N. Lermontov’s circle of “insurgents.” She conducted propaganda among peasants in the Volga provinces. Arrested in 1874 in Saratov, she was a defendant in the “Trial of the 193” (1877–78). At her second arrest in 1879 in Kiev, she offered armed resistance. Leshern was sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to life at hard labor in Siberia. She died in the Transbaikal region.
