Leslie, Charles Robert (lĕz`lē), 1794–1859, English painter and writer, b. London. Educated in the United States, he returned to England to study art and to work. He painted incidents from literature and also executed portraits, including one of Dr. John Wakefield Francis at the Metropolitan Museum. Leslie is probably best known for his writings which include Memoirs of the Life of John Constable (1843), A Handbook for Young Painters (1855), and Autobiographical Recollections (1860).
