Barskii, Lev Mironovich 

Born Nov. 12 (25), 1909, in the village of Staraia Kul’naia, in present-day Odessa Oblast. Soviet Moldavian writer. Member of the CPSU since 1941.

In 1940, Barskii graduated from the Gorky Institute of Literature. He began to publish in 1931. He published a collection of stories Toward a New Life (1933), the tale Turn (1935), and On the Banks of the Dnestr (1939). The main themes of Barskii’s works are the collectivization of agriculture and new relations among people. He wrote the tales In Floreny (1952) about the role of the teacher in a village and Buzhoriane (1954) about the everyday life and work of a secretary of a regional Party committee. His collection Plays appeared in 1957, and his novel The Philology Department in 1959. Moral-ethical problems are posed in Barskii’s novel The Swallows Return (1964).
