Rukhin, Lev Borisovich
Born Oct. 16 (29), 1912, in Moscow; died Sept. 8, 1959, in Leningrad. Soviet geologist; doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (1944). Professor at Leningrad University from 1945. Member of the CPSU from 1941. After his graduation from Leningrad University in 1933, Rukhin worked at the university. His main works were devoted to lithology and paleogeography. He was one of the first to use statistical methods in studying sedimentary rocks. He established the principles of studying granulometric composition in order to establish the genesis of ancient sands. In his Principles of Lithology (1953; 3rd ed., 1969), Rukhin examined the stages of and conditions for formation of sedimentary rocks, described the methods of facies analysis, and distinguished the main types of sedimentary formations and set down the patterns of their formation and distribution.
