leveraged buyout, the takeover of a company, financed by borrowed funds. Often, the target company's assets are used as security for the loans acquired to finance the purchase. The acquiring company or group then repays the loans from the target company's profits or by selling its assets. Many leveraged buyouts have been financed through junk bonds junk bond, a bond that involves greater than usual risk as an investment and pays a relatively high rate of interest, typically issued by a company lacking an established earnings history or having a questionable credit history. ..... | Last year the volume of leveraged buyouts I in Europe reached a level of 117 billion [euro], This year is shaping up to become even bigger. The article on private equity, "Quest for Returns Boosts Private Equity," in the July/August issue, should have said that Praesidian Capital, a mezzanine debt provider for middle-market companies, boasts a war chest of $157 million, of which more than half is invested in management buyouts, leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations and refinancings, including four investments alongside private equity sponsors. Options considered range from private investments in beaten-down public companies to leveraged buyouts -- a controversial tactic that VCs have tried before during previous downturns, but met with little success. |
