Levi-Civita, Tullio (tl`lyō lā`vē-chē`vētä), 1873–1942, Italian mathematician. He taught at the universities of Padua (1898–1919) and Rome (1919–38) and was noted for his researches in pure geometry, hydrodynamics, celestial mechanics, and tensor analysis (see tensor tensor, in mathematics, quantity that depends linearly on several vector variables and that varies covariantly with respect to some variables and contravariantly with respect to others when the coordinate axes are rotated (see Cartesian coordinates ).
