Levshin, Aleksei Iraklievich
Born 1799; died Sept. 16 (28), 1879, in Kursk Province. Russian statesman. Graduated from the University of Kharkov (1818). Levshin was governor (gradonachal’nik) of Odessa from 1831 to 1837. In 1844 he became director of the department of agriculture, and from 1856 to 1859 he was assistant minister of internal affairs. He took part in the preparation of the Peasant Reform of 1861. Levshin was one of the founders of the Russian Geographical Society (1845). He was a member of the State Council from 1868. He was the author of the studies Historical and Statistical Survey of the Ural Cossacks (1823) and Description of the Kirkiz Cossack or Kirkiz-Kaisak Hordes and Steppes (1832). He left his memoirs, Memorable Moments in My Life (Russkii arkhiv, 1885, no. 8). Want to thank TFD for its existence?
