Levy, Gustave Lehman (1910–76) investment banker; born in New Orleans. He left Tulane University because his widowed mother could not afford tuition, moved to New York City, and in 1933 joined Goldman, Sachs & Co. He became a partner in 1945 and rose to chairman of the management committee in 1969, making him one of the most powerful figures on Wall Street. He also served as chairman of the New York Stock Exchange board of governors (1967–69). He supported charitable and artistic activities and was a top fund raiser for the Republican Party.
