Lewis, Andrew

Lewis, Andrew, 1720?–1781, American soldier, b. Ireland. As a boy he emigrated with his family to America and settled near Staunton, Va. Later, he became a leading frontier Indian fighter. In 1754, at the beginning of the French and Indian War, he was with George Washington at the defeat at Fort Necessity. He led an unsuccessful expedition (the Sandy Creek expedition) against tribes in the Ohio country in 1756. He is best remembered for his victory (1774) in Lord Dunmore's War over Native Americans at Point Pleasant (now in West Virginia). In the American Revolution he was a brigadier general in the Continental Army.
