Lewis, Sir George Cornewall, 1806–63, English statesman and man of letters. Entering Parliament as a Liberal in 1847, he served as chancellor of exchequer (1855–58), home secretary (1859–61), and secretary of war (1861–63). While editor (1852–55) of the Edinburgh Review, he contributed many articles to the publication. He was the author of An Essay on the Origin and Formation of the Romance Languages (1835), Enquiry into the Credibility of the Early Roman History (1855), and An Historical Survey of the Astronomy of the Ancients (1862). |
