Leyendecker, J. C. (Joseph Christian) (1874–1951) illustrator; born in Montabour, Germany. His family emigrated to Chicago (1882), he worked as an engraver, and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Paris (1896–98). He and his illustrator brother, Frank Leyendecker, moved to New York City (1900), and then to a mansion in New Rochelle, N.Y. Joseph became famous for his advertisements for the "Arrow Collar Man," and his stylized covers for such periodicals as Collier's and The Saturday Evening Post. How to thank TFD for its existence?
