Lhasa apso

Lhasa apso (lä`sə ăp`sō), breed of small, alert nonsporting dog nonsporting dog, classification used by breeders and kennel clubs to designate dogs that may formerly have been bred to hunt or work but that are now raised chiefly as house pets and companions.

 developed in Tibet many centuries ago. It stands about 11 in. (27.9 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 13 to 15 lb (5.9–6.8 kg). Its heavy, straight coat is long and very dense. It may be any of various colors or combinations of colors, although shades of gold are preferred. The Lhasa apso was raised in the lamaseries and villages outlying Lhasa, the ancient center of Lamaism. Specimens of the breed were traditionally given as gifts by the Dali Lamas to the Chinese emperors and other dignitaries. Today it is raised as a watchdog and pet. Breed of dog from Tibet. The Lhasa apso is hardy, intelligent, and watchful. Longer than it is tall, it stands 10–11 in. (25–28 cm) tall and weighs 13–15 lb (6–7 kg). It has a heavily haired tail that curls over its back and a long, profuse coat that covers its eyes. Its coat may be of various colours, but most breeders prefer golden-brown shades.

The writing can be inventive: the lead-in to the show The Most Extreme--a rundown of quirky animal traits--alludes to George Orwell ("Some animals are more extreme than others"), and a recent feature on a vet actually called a dog's recovery "a Lhasa Apso ipso facto.
