Liapunov, Aleksei Andreevich 

Born Sept. 25 (Oct. 8), 1911, in Moscow; died there June 23, 1973. Soviet mathematician. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964). Member of the CPSU from 1944.

Liapunov was a professor at Moscow State University from 1952 to 1962. Beginning in 1962 he worked at the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Liapunov was a specialist in the theory of functions and the mathematical aspects of cybernetics. His principal studies dealt with set theory, theoretical problems of programming, mathematical linguistics, and mathematical biology. Liapunov was one of the first Soviet scientists to realize the importance of cybernetics and made a large contribution to the organization of studies on cybernetics in the USSR. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and several medals.
