Licklider, Joseph (Carl Robnett) (1915–90) computer scientist; born in St. Louis, Mo. He was among the first in the 1960s to recognize the potential for user-friendly computers. He published a series of papers in which he outlined the "man-computer symbiosis." He was affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1950–85) and made contributions in the application of computers to libraries and information storage and retrieval.
