Lidzbarski, Mark

Born Jan. 7, 1868, in Plock, Poland; died Nov. 13, 1928, in Göttingen. German Semitologist and epigraphist.

Lidzbarski studied and worked in Germany. In 1895 he became a privatdocent at the University of Kiel. In 1907 he became a professor at the University of Greifswald. In 1917 he moved to Göttingen. Lidzbarski’s main achievement was the creation of a Semitic epigraphy. His works, which embraced all aspects of the science, remain important to this day.

At international congresses of Orientalists, Lidzbarski Medals are awarded for the best works in epigraphy.
