Lie, Ottar 

Born 1896; died Feb. 28, 1943. Norwegian labor movement leader.

Lie was a metalworker by profession. He became a member of the Norwegian Labor Party (NLP) in 1912, and during World War I (1914–18) he was one of the leaders of its left wing. From 1921 to 1923, Lie was a member of the Central Committee of the NLP. In 1923 he became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Norway (CPN). In 1927 he was co-opted as a member of the Politburo of the CPN, and in 1929 he became a secretary of the Central Committee of the CPN. After the invasion of Norway by fascist German troops in April 1940, Lie was one of the organizers of the resistance movement. He was arrested by the fascist German occupiers in October 1942 and was executed after being tortured.
