a boat, propelled by oars or a motor, used for rescuing people at sea, escaping from a sinking ship, etc.

lifeboat [′līf‚bōt]
(naval architecture)
A small boat hoisted on davits or carried on one of the upper decks of a vessel, which can be quickly lowered into the water in case of an emergency.
